New Facebook group for connecting hiking families

Published on May 3, 2022 by littlefeethikingLeave a comment

I’ve had several folks ask me about hiking groups for local families. I’ve created a Facebook group for local families to connect with each other. It is called “Hiking with Kids – Portland / Vancouver Area“

Today was Groundhog Day!
Have you ever hiked at Salish Ponds in Fairview? I scouted it out today for my new Portland book and I was surprised at all the bird activity in such an urban environment. We hiked about 1.8 miles on gravel/dirt paths and enjoyed stomping on ice and seeing geese, ducks, robins, and other types of birds. How amazing that we live in a place with such accessible wildlife watching.
Have you hiked the Summit Springs hike in my first book? Most folks probably haven’t. The trailhead isn’t marked, there are no grand vistas, the trail is a steady uphill, and there are some tricky creek crossings. So why hike it?
I just saw a trip report form the sunny side of the Gorge indicating that flowers are finally starting to bloom. They are a bit late this year.
Today, we took a hike at Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge and had this amazing place almost completely to ourselves! We saw migratory swans, bufflehead ducks (my favorite), magnificent oak trees (and galls), the plankhouse, trains, and more. You can learn more about this hike in my first book.
Today we stopped by Fairgrounds Park to check out the Fairgrounds Connector Trail (in my second book “little feet hiking two”). This trail is normally a really mellow, lower-risk way for kids to get exposed to trail hiking…but today we only made it about halfway before hitting a ton of blowdown.
